ONLINE - Black Point Estate: A Preservation Success Story

To celebrate National Historic Preservation Month, we are pleased to present this online program focusing on the extraordinary Black Point Estate, located on the shore of Geneva Lake in Wisconsin.

Historic preservation is difficult under the best of circumstances. During this presentation you will learn how Black Point was preserved despite numerous challenges, including legal opposition, over a ten year period. Since 2005, it has been owned and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society, which opens it seasonally for tours. You will also learn what amazing architecture was lost around Geneva Lake and why historic preservation can be an asset to any community.

Black Point was designed by Chicago architect Adolph Cudell and completed in 1888 for Chicago beer baron Conrad Seipp and his family. (Cudell designed Seipp’s Chicago house at 3300 S. Michigan Avenue at the same time; it was demolished in 1933). Four generations of the family occupied and cared for Black Point, creating a time capsule of late 19th century design that provides a rare glimpse inside an elegant summer home of the era.

The program will be presented by Dave Desimone, director of Black Point Estate and Gardens. Prior to moving to Wisconsin in 2013, Desimone held positions with the Ohio Historical Society, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, and the Holden Arboretum.

The program will be recorded. A link to the recording will be sent to all registrants after the program, and will remain active for seven days.
