Smart Ways to Give

Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), and appreciated stock are three tax-savvy ways to support Glessner House - each can help you make a lasting impact without affecting your day-to-day finances. Please consult your financial advisor to determine which option works best for you.

Glessner House is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Our FEIN is 36-3985457.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS (DAFs)

A Donor Advised Fund is like a charitable savings account. You set it up with a financial institution or community foundation, and contribute funds, at which time you get your tax deduction. You can then recommend grants from the fund to organizations such as Glessner House whenever you are ready.

Benefits of giving through a DAF:

  • You can support Glessner House at any time using funds you’ve already set aside for charity

  • You may may avoid capital gains taxes by donating appreciated assets like stocks to your DAF

  • It’s easy to do - most DAFs let you give online in just a few clicks

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS (QCDs)

If you are age 70-1/2 or older, you can give directly from your IRA to Glessner House through what is known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution. In order for the QCD to qualify, you will need to contact your IRA administrator and ask them to send the gift directly to Glessner House.

Benefits of giving through a QCD:

  • It counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

  • You can give up to $100,000 per year, tax-free

  • It reduces your taxable income, even if you don’t itemize deductions

APPRECIATED STOCK

You can donate stock directly to Glessner House, rather than selling it first, which might result in capital gains taxes. Stock can be transferred directly to our brokerage account at Benjamin F. Edwards and we will take care of the rest. Please contact us for our account information if you are interested in this option.
