“African Marigold,” a design for block-printed cotton textiles created by William Morris in 1876; it was one of his earliest designs for fabric. The Glessners selected this pattern for the upholstered furniture in Fanny’s bedroom including her day bed and side chairs. The reproduction fabric, installed in 2020, was made by Trustworth Studios.
The pattern is named for the small orange marigolds, arranged within a broader design of stylized lilies and curling acanthus leaves. The 23 original wood printing blocks used to create the pattern are preserved in the collection of the William Morris Gallery.
“African Marigold” is one of eight Morris patterns featured in our exclusive collection of notecards, William Morris at Glessner House. The eight cards, each measuring 5x7, feature four wallpaper and four textile designs used in the house. Click here to purchase.
