Front cover of The Modern Reader’s Chaucer: The Complete Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, by John S. P. Tatlock and Percy MacKaye (New York: The MacMillan Company, 1912). The Glessners owned a first edition of this book, which was the first to put Chaucer’s work into modern English. The illustrations were by the British artist Warwick Goble (1862-1943), best known for his work in children’s books. The scene on the cover shows “Cleopatra’s Galley at the Battle of Actium,” used to illustrate Chaucer’s “The Legend of Good Women.”
